National Bully Prevention Month: Online school offers solution to one Louisiana student's crisis10/16/2014 The Vieux Carre Property Owners, Residents and Associates (VCPORA) and French Quarter Citizens Inc. announced their endorsement of the Landrieu Administration's NOLA Patrol/French Quarter Improvement Fund proposal, which will be considered by the City Council today.
If approved the Council, NOLA Patrol will be a new enforcement team in the National Historic Landmark neighborhood, assisting residents and business owners in enforcing traffic, sanitation, vagrancy, zoning and public safety violations which are related to the area's quality of life. The 50 NOLA Patrol officers will work under the 8th District of the New Orleans Police Department, manning shifts for 24-hour, 7-day coverage. Funding for the initiative comes from a hotel self-assessment coordinated by the New Orleans Convention and Visitors Bureau and approved last year by the State Legislature. While the majority of funds from the special assessment will be dedicated to the patrols, some funds will be utilized to fix broken street lights and make emergency sidewalk repairs, among other minor infrastructure improvements. The VCPORA and FQC Inc. Boards applaud the Mayor for this commitment to the Quarter and its residents. A factsheet about the program, provided by the Mayor's Office are available at this link: http://www.kreweoftruth.com/web/data/documents/nolapatrols.pdf The U.S. Green Building Council Louisiana Chapter invites interested students, parents and other residents to see a model of a green school here in New Orleans. On Saturday, Oct. 25, Ben Franklin High School will be featured as the USGBC Louisiana’s Green Schools Showcase, starting with a tour of the building and a reception to celebrate the designation.
This event, to be held from 11am-1pm at 2001 Leon C. Simon Drive in New Orleans, is the last local event of Greenbuild week, and the last stop on the Green Makes Cents tour – one of the final tours offered as part of the Greenbuild International Conference and Expo 2014, to be held at Morial Convention Center from Oct. 22-24. The conference - the flagship event of the USGBC, which operates the LEED certification program – is expected to bring up to 25,000 green building professionals to the city that week. Statement from Veronica Brooks, Policy Director, Louisiana Association of Public Charter Schools, on the BESE School Innovation and Turnaround Committee’s votes today to deny charter applications from Greater Grace Charter Academy, Kingdom Builders Community Development Corporation, Inc., Smothers Academy, and to defer applications from Louisiana Charter Foundation Inc. and Louisiana Delta Empowerment Group:
“It is hard to operate a charter school, which is why we have a very hard authorization process. But it is also why our state is ranked third in the nation for the strength of our charter laws and second in the nation for the sustained health of our movement. We are about quality charter schools, not quantity. The constructive critique applicants received today will hopefully help them prepare for reapplication.” 4 of the 7 members of the New Orleans City Council say Judge Lloyd Medley should be re-elected for another term at Orleans Parish Civil District Court. District B Councilperson Latoya Cantrell summed up her and her colleagues support saying, “Judge Medley’s 18 years on the bench, twice re-elected and being chosen by his fellow judges to be their Chief Judge speaks volumes about his integrity, fairness and honesty. There is no question that he is well respected by his colleagues and the public and deserves another term presiding over Division “D” at Orleans Civil Court.”
Morris Jeff Community School will hold an Open House for prospective students in grades Pre-Kindergarten 4 to 7th Grade on Wednesday, October 22, 6pm to 7:30pm at the school’s temporary location at 3368 Esplanade Ave. in New Orleans. Local School Boards in Louisiana’s 64 parishes are receiving more and more charter applications while parents across the state express greater desire for choice in education.
